Once again, I traveled light during the 3-day holiday weekend.  I’m talking camera gear, not clothing.  We decided to road trip to Tahoe.  Our place was fantastic and the weather was even better; I’m convinced that Tahoe’s summers are much more reliably gorgeous than its winters.  I brought just my Panasonic GF1 with a 20mm f/1.7 prime lens, a flash, and a battery charger.  I thought that I would eventually miss not being able to zoom with a compact camera, but so far, not at all.  The 20mm lens is incredibly fast, captures great images, and I just zoom on foot!   Here are a handful of favorites.

One of the great unforeseen benefits of Serene’s blog, What to Wear Running, is that she gets to try out and review running gear.  Puma was gracious enough to ask her to test drive their latest, so we took advantage of some perfect weather and did a run/shoot/review in the foothills.  What else would we do on a Saturday afternoon?  Puma also very generously included a full outfit and shoes for me.  The shoes, Puma Faas 300’s, are the absolute lightest things that I’ve ever worn.  3.5 ounces each.  Ridiculous.  And trust me when I say that my gear is even more colorful (and coordinated) than hers, but you’ll have to check out her blog to see it in all its glory.

I am so excited about this print!  A few weeks ago, I was asked to create a print for a client who was doing some home redecorating.  They wanted a very large print of an image from my collection and decided on image of star trails that I’d shot a couple of years ago in Lake Tahoe.  The original image can be seen here.  The image is an hour-long exposure looking up as the earth rotates and stars make trails across the night sky.  As you can see, the print is huge (literally, the only reason I’m in the picture is to provide a sense of scale).  Five feet tall, actually.  And 40 inches wide.  And on METAL: That is the best part!  The print is on aluminum, which gives it incredible visual appeal.  Prints on metal take on this luminescent quality that can only be fully appreciated in person, in my opinion.  The colors seem more brilliant and vibrant.  It’s almost like the prints become somewhere between 2D and 3D.  I also love that the print comes ready to hang!  I would love to make more metallic prints for anyone who wants one…but I might have to get myself one first!!!  If you’re also curious, drop me a line.

One of the best things that happened to me as a child was being sent to Gilman School.  Outside of my parents, Gilman laid the foundation for my life to this point, and the further I get from my time there, the closer I feel to the place.  Maybe I just appreciate it more as I get older.  So I was really so excited to attend its San Francisco alumni event last week.  A few fellow alums and I grabbed dinner after the event.  Tim Holley came along.  Mr Holley, as he will always be known to me, is on the left.  He is also a Gilman alum and has been a teacher there for nearly three decades (he’s not really aging).   I also wrote about him last year when I went by the school for a drop-in visit.  He taught each of us African American Literature.  He coached each of us in baseball or basketball.  And he still cares very much about what and how we are doing today.  Sitting at dinner, catching one another up on the guys who weren’t present, listening to Mr. Holley’s remembrances of  less mature versions of ourselves, I kept thinking about how fortunate we were to have teachers like him.  I wish every child had a Mr. Holley at school.  And a Gilman.

As I was putting the lid on last year’s image library (which basically means I was moving the files off my computer to my 3 backup locations), I came across lots of images that I really love but hadn’t shared.  Let’s face it, when you take 40,000 images a year, not even a loving mother will sit through them all.  But here are 20 moments from 2010 that caught my eye the second time around.
