I have always liked celebrating my birthday with a little travel.  This year’s destination was Portland, Oregon.  Serene planned a great weekend and wow, what a great town!  Gorge-ous sights, some of the friendliest folks west of Minneapolis, great food (Pine State Biscuits is amazing…the soundtrack is even better than the food!), and unforgettable signs.  Signs??  Yes, signs.  I cannot imagine why I wouldn’t visit at least once a year.  Loved it.

Two weeks ago, I published a few teaser images from a recent workshop that I did with Tyler Stableford in Moab, Utah.  And I’ve been pretty much bursting to share some more from that weekend.  So, here goes.  On the first day of the workshop, we had the chance to work with the cowboys and cowgirls who staff the ranch where we stayed.  I’ve never photographed anything like it before.  Stampeding stallions, steer roping, and a little downtime made for some pretty incredible scenery.  Devon, Jake, Melissa, Jill, Monty, and Chance (yeah, that’s right) were our models for the day, and they were naturals.  Or at least we were bossy.    I’m still cleaning the dust out of my gear, but it was definitely worth it.  Not only were Tyler and his assistant, Draper White, fantastic as usual, but I also learned plenty from the fellow attendees….a seriously talented bunch.  Thanks for another great time, Tyler.  Coming soon….Day 2 at Arches National Park!

One of the best things that happened to me as a child was being sent to Gilman School.  Outside of my parents, Gilman laid the foundation for my life to this point, and the further I get from my time there, the closer I feel to the place.  Maybe I just appreciate it more as I get older.  So I was really so excited to attend its San Francisco alumni event last week.  A few fellow alums and I grabbed dinner after the event.  Tim Holley came along.  Mr Holley, as he will always be known to me, is on the left.  He is also a Gilman alum and has been a teacher there for nearly three decades (he’s not really aging).   I also wrote about him last year when I went by the school for a drop-in visit.  He taught each of us African American Literature.  He coached each of us in baseball or basketball.  And he still cares very much about what and how we are doing today.  Sitting at dinner, catching one another up on the guys who weren’t present, listening to Mr. Holley’s remembrances of  less mature versions of ourselves, I kept thinking about how fortunate we were to have teachers like him.  I wish every child had a Mr. Holley at school.  And a Gilman.

Last weekend, I was fortunate enough to attend the 2010 ADCOLOR Awards in Miami as one of the photographers for the weekend.  In a word, WOW!  What an amazing event!  ADCOLOR, an industry consortium founded in 2005, is the brainchild of Tiffany R. Warren (see her with award show host Soledad O’Brien in the final image below).  The consortium promotes and celebrates the efforts of diverse role models and leaders in the marketing, advertising, and media industries.  I have known about ADCOLOR since 2008 when my good friend, Akintayo Adewole, became the music director for the organization.  But I really had no idea of how wonderful this event would be.  There is such an amazingly motivated group of people, mostly volunteers, who plan and orchestrate the show each fall.  This year’s all-star honoree was none other than Queen Latifah.  Also in the house were Dwyane Wade and Alonzo Mourning.  Some of my favorite moments:

Coltrane Curtis’ award speech.  Hilarious and touching.

The afterparty on the yacht hosted by DJ Irie and Kid Capri.  Amazing.

Interrupting a D.Wade tweet to ask him to look at me for the image below.  He likes his phone time.

Spending time with Akintayo as we indulge our respective passions.

Becoming a member of the ADCOLOR family.

I was completely blown away by what Tiffany and her organization have been able to create in a few short years.  Congratulations, ADCOLOR, on a fantastic awards weekend.  And thank you.

I should have known when I was greeted at the door by two little boys who immediately introduced themselves (with their full names)…and then grabbed my hand to lead me on a tour of  their home…that Sunday morning was going to be great.  We played Memory, built a home inside the home with couch cushions, went deer-watching, dressed up for Halloween, and danced in a deluge (ok, they danced while I took pictures).  Even the pouring rain was just another play thing for these two beautiful kids.  Very special thanks to Jon and Dayna for inviting me into their home to capture some images of their boys.
