During a recent trip to NYC, I happened to be working with this view. The Freedom Tower. And then a storm came along, which meant a 10-minute work break to get a few shots. The clouds kept getting more and more dramatic, until my 10-minute break had become an hour. The mental respite was more than welcome…nothing stills my mind the way photography does.
Prior to visiting Idaho for the first time, if anyone had ever told me that I would love it there…year round…I would have called them nuts. I’ve been visiting Idaho for a few years now and it keeps getting better. We just returned from a few days in Boise and McCall and I’m already looking forward to going back! It doesn’t hurt that I experienced a few photographic firsts on this trip: my first bald eagle, my first hummingbird, and my first overnight shoot. But as you’ll see, Oliver (Serene’s nephew), stole the show. Many thanks to Serene’s family for planning such a great trip and inviting me to join them!

I am so excited about this print! A few weeks ago, I was asked to create a print for a client who was doing some home redecorating. They wanted a very large print of an image from my collection and decided on image of star trails that I’d shot a couple of years ago in Lake Tahoe. The original image can be seen here. The image is an hour-long exposure looking up as the earth rotates and stars make trails across the night sky. As you can see, the print is huge (literally, the only reason I’m in the picture is to provide a sense of scale). Five feet tall, actually. And 40 inches wide. And on METAL: That is the best part! The print is on aluminum, which gives it incredible visual appeal. Prints on metal take on this luminescent quality that can only be fully appreciated in person, in my opinion. The colors seem more brilliant and vibrant. It’s almost like the prints become somewhere between 2D and 3D. I also love that the print comes ready to hang! I would love to make more metallic prints for anyone who wants one…but I might have to get myself one first!!! If you’re also curious, drop me a line.

This weekend I met and photographed New Jersey-based recording artist Ant Grant and his producer, Tomas Ramos. Thanks to Akintayo Adewole, one of my closest friends and Creative Director of Akande Music, for making the introduction. Ant is a phenomenal subject and an even better guy. After the first couple shots, it was obvious he had done it before. In addition to being a recording artist, Ant is an actor, and was immediately comfortable in front of the camera. I could write a lot…a whole lot…about what I learned on this shoot. I experimented with shooting into the sun with high speed sync, was saved a couple of times by my new Lastolite diffusers/reflectors, pushed my flashes to the limit on a rooftop in 90-degree weather, stood on the ledge of a 5-story building to gey an intersection into the background, wished I had brought water (several times), pined for a Hoodman Loupe so that I could see my LCD in the blazing sun, fell even more in love with my 24-foot ETTL cable, and was VERY thankful that I bought the third set of 4 rechargeable AA’s. Actually, there’s a lot more that I learned on the photography side, but the best part of the day was meeting Ant, Thomas, and their manager, Darren. Yesterday was a timely reminder of how good it feels to be surrounded by like-minded Black males who are as passionate about their art as I feel I am about photography. A fantastic day. I’m looking forward to doing it again. And Ant does smile…I have pictures to prove it.

Great work bro you are truly awesome man it was a lot of fun working with you. The time will come when we will be doing this on a major level and we’ll get back together like it’s nothing man all fun and jokes while creating a master piece…

Okay, I promise this will be my last post….but are these REAL????? Your talent is mind blowing…I want to be like you when I grow up as a photographer….for real…simply beautiful…I have never seen such beautiful work. Ants photos….amazing. Okay, I will seriously try to refrain from sending these comments before you think I’m this crazed person…trust me, I’m not, I’m just blown away by your work!
