Shauna is all about fitness. And hip-hop. And UnderArmourWomen. And Stanford. But mostly fitness. She and I have collaborated before, and its always led to some of my favorite work. When I saw this space, I knew right away that I’d want to photograph Shauna here. So last weekend she brought the energy, the poses, the TRX, the pull-ups, and, as always, plenty of gear from her sponsor, Under Armour. I showed up with a camera.

Shauna, thanks for doing one more handstand just so I can get the perfect shot.  And for being such a great friend.

Over the years I’ve found that, when it comes to my photography, personal projects keep me most excited about shooting.  I can’t thank Bryan enough for asking me to join him on this recent shoot.  Hidad, our gracious subject on a recent Sunday afternoon, was interested in having some portraits done.  Bryan found a great space to capture him, and Hidad put up with “left…right…up…down…this way….no that way…I changed my mind, back the other way”  for over an hour.   On this shoot, I wanted to experiment with mixing flash with natural light.  Personal projects are like gold: I can experiment (with plenty of room to fail), I always learn something new, and my excitement for photography is reinvigorated every time.  And then I get to use my new tricks on client shoots.  I was so excited about these results that I scheduled my next personal project shoot as these images were downloading.  Stay tuned!

My nephew, Josh, and I took to London for the 2013 holiday season.  I was so thrilled to take him on his first trip to Europe.  He was (almost) as excited to be my on-call photographic subject for 10 days.  You can tell by his expression, right?  Let’s do it again, Josh!

Sometimes the most fun shoots are just spontaneous.  Shauna, in addition to being a PhD, a hip-hop lover, and an Under Armor-sponsored health and fitness expert, is a good friend of mine.  We went up to San Francisco looking for some cool art to shoot in front of and we found it on Bryant Street.  Shauna spent two hours exhausting herself so that I could take a few pics.  Along the way, we befriended the FedEx guy, got advice from a stranger who insisted that I had no idea what I was doing, and were encouraged to “F*** Ansel; be the Malcolm X of photography!”  Uhh….I’ll do my best?  Thanks for being a great sport, Shauna.  And for doing your best to make the rest of us look like slackers.  Knowing how sore you were the next day somehow makes me feel like I got a little exercise by association.  If only it could be so easy.

Wow!!! Amazing shots! Amazing asanas!!! What a great team effort! Are you submitting these to Yogo Journal?

Serene had never been to Huddart Park, and I hadn’t been in at least 7 years (which is almost like never having gone), so we decided to check it out yesterday afternoon.  Grabbing my camera bag was kind of an afterthought.  Really happy that I did.  Our 6pm walk was full of two things: bloodthirsty mosquitoes and some amazing light.  Here are a couple of my favorite shots of the day.
